From Sisterlocks to combined locs…

A long natural hair journey has brought me here: to a very different way of caring for my locs.

Love Those Locs

I’ve had natural hair for most of my life, including traditional locs for around twelve years, loose natural hair, and Sisterlocks twice. I thought my second set of Sisterlocks, established in December 2018, were here to stay.
But sometimes life has other plans.

The photograph that changed my mind

In December 2025, a photograph, of my crown area stopped me in my tracks. I had just had a retightening, but what I saw was more than the usual scalpy look of a fresh reti. It showed me that my crown was thinning.

That photo instantly changed what I was willing to do with my hair. I have not had a retightening since.

My journey to freer locs

Since then, I’ve been combining my Sisterlocks to maintain the health of my hair and grow thicker, freer locs, without retightenings.

I’m documenting what happens here and on YouTube, sharing what I’m learning as I try different ways of combining my locs and experiment with how best to care for my hair and scalp.

It’s a real learning experience, and I’m figuring it out as I go.

If you’re on your own loc or hair journey, I hope you’ll find something here that is useful, interesting or simply makes you think about your own hair differently. 💜
