It’s been a long journey, with plenty of hair twists and turns along the way!
Each stage has had its own highs and lows – and, in some cases, hair loss too.
When I look back at all the different hairstyles I’ve had, I realise they weren’t just hairstyles. They were ways of expressing myself, respondig to life and sometimes simply trying something new.
My hair journey
— Combined Sisterlocks – since December 2025
— Second set of Sisterlocks installed – December 2018
— Loose natural once again – with an undercut 2017
— First set of Sisterlocks installed – 4th December 2014
— Loose natural again – for about two years
— Locs – these traditional locs began life as comb twists – had them for 12 years
— Weaves – curly ones mostly and then a re-useable straight one that looked very full!
— Wet Look – once!
— Single plait extensions – my favourite was a bob with the singed ends, but boy did those ends itch a lot!
— Relaxers – at home and then in professional hair salons
— Loose natural – single plaits or twists
Writing this list has been a fun trip down hair memory lane.
And all those hairstyles have been, now that I think about it, my way of expressing myself and marking different phases of my life. The reasons for choosing them were as varied as the hairstyles themselves – and each phase marked one or more major or minor life events.
So although my current chapter might look very different to some of the earlier ones, it isn’t a completely new story.
The unexpected turn
In December 2025, that journey took its most unexpected turn yet.
I stopped retightening my Sisterlocks and started combining them.
What began with noticing changes in my hair has become a much bigger experiment in paying attention, trying things differently and seeing what happens when I give my hair more freedom.
