The internet is brimming with information and testimonials about the wonders of onion juice and in particular how effective it can be for hair growth and for hair loss.
And if you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know that I have thin edges, particularly on one side – and that I’m also very interested in natural and organic products.
So I thought, this needs some investigation to see what it’s all about – and maybe it could be something to try out.
I decided to try the enhanced onion juice recipe which is used by Green Beauty. And it involves using 1 onion, 2 garlic cloves and 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper.
To recap some of the benefits of this enhanced onion juice recipe are that it:
- is stimulating to the scalp and the hair follicles
- has antimicrobial properties which may help fight scalp infection as these can contribute to hair loss
- contains garlic which has antibacterial and antifungal properties, plus sulphur, zinc and copper – to stimulate blood flow to the scalp and promote hair growth
- contains cayenne pepper also stimulates blood flow to the scalp
- can be a serious growth aid
I blended the onion and garlic and strained the mixture to get rid of all the fibres and then I added the cayenne pepper.
I then rubbed it on the hairline area and wrapped it in cling film and left it on for 1 hour. I then rinsed it off and then used shampoo and rinsed thoroughly.
I did this once a month for 5 months from April to August.
Did it work for me? Check out the video so that you can judge for yourself.
But I stopped using the onion juice recipe just at the point where I was going to use it for 2-3 consecutive days per month every month, as an extra boost.
September came and went and before I knew it, it was October and I hadn’t used it. So why?
Here are my reasons:
- I know it sounds incredibly lazy but the effort of making the onion juice recipe for such a small patch of hair every month just felt like a real chore. It didn’t seem worth the effort.
- If I’m honest, I wasn’t really convinced that the onion juice recipe was working. Maybe I expected too much too soon and just wasn’t patient for long enough. But it felt that I was doing a lot for no results.
- The smell! Oh goodness, the smell!! I’d put the onion juice on and it really felt as though it had soaked into the lowest layers of my skin. Because even after thoroughly rinsing it out, applying shampoo and rinsing that out AND adding an essential oil, I would still get very strong wafts of the onion and garlic scent whenever I moved my head. It felt as though everywhere I went, the same meal was being cooked and I could smell it! I had thought that I’d test it on my hairline and then advance to using it all over my scalp but the smell was really off-putting and knowing how effective Sisterlocks are at absorbing odours, I knew I couldn’t keep using this recipe on a small area, much less using it all over my scalp!
- I just didn’t like it. Originally, when I started using the onion juice recipe, it was around the time the YouTube channel started, in mid April 2020, and so the plan was to do it every month around the middle of the month until November/December. I set up an alert on my phone. But after the second month, whenever the alert came up, I’d postpone it for a week then another week. The writing was on the wall. And I suddenly had the thought that if any hairdo or hair regime is going to work, it’s got to be something you like and if there is no joy or apparent benefit, why subject yourself to doing something that you don’t want to do because you hear it works or feel obliged to do it. So I decided to let myself off the hook.
So for all of these reasons, onion juice on Sisterlocks are a no-no for me. But that isn’t to say the combination won’t work for you.
